Wakefield Trinity Stun Warrington to Claim Super League Title

Published: October 4, 2026, 2:01 am

Wakefield Trinity have been crowned champions of England for the first time since 1968, marking a remarkable rise after defeating Warrington Wolves 23-10 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. Trinity, who were playing in the Championship just two years ago, solidified their status as the most unlikely winner in the competition’s history. Wakefield’s fourth place finish was their highest regular season effort in the Super League era. Let alone at any point throughout the season, this is a final few would have predicted seven days ago. And Wakefield Trinity then stunned the whole of rugby league as they demolished Wigan on the Warriors’ own patch to make it to Old Trafford, but Warrington snuck past Leeds Rhinos. While Warrington have been close in previous years, Wakefield have been spectacular bolters in 2026. They were sixth last year and went two places better this season before memorable play-off successes over Leigh Leopards and then the Warriors. In the build-up during the week, Powell had challenged his players to earn legendary status, knowing that was their long-term reward if they could emerge victorious. And in a period where everything they did was working, Jake Trueman’s high kick on the last tackle was spectacularly caught by Johnstone above opposite wing Albert Hopoate and tapped back for the supporting Vagana to dive over.

Daryl Powell’s squad dominated the opening exchanges, carrying the momentum from their recent semi-final demolition of Wigan Warriors. By halftime, they had raced into a 19-0 lead, extending a scoring streak that reached 52 unanswered points including their recent performances. Cameron Scott opened the scoring following a creative reverse pass from Lachlan Walmsley, while Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga also crossed the whitewash to pile pressure on the Wolves. Jack Sinfield added a drop goal before the break to further extend the lead. After scoring 33 unanswered points in a spell at Wigan, Wakefield simply brought that momentum with them to Old Trafford as they absolutely bossed the first half, stretching that streak to 52 points.

Warrington, appearing in their fifth Grand Final, struggled to find an answer to the intensity of their opponents. Although Corey Hall was sent to the sin-bin early in the second half, providing Warrington a man advantage, they managed only two tries from Arron Lindop. Any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Tom Johnstone broke through to score the decisive try for Wakefield, sealing the result as the clock ticked down.

The victory completes a meteoric turnaround for Wakefield, who were relegated in 2023 but secured their Super League return via the IMG grading system. Conversely, Warrington’s long wait for a title continues, with the club’s last championship victory dating back to 1955. Despite heading into the match on a strong run of nine wins from their last ten outings, Sam Burgess’ side was unable to overcome the clinical execution displayed by Trinity throughout the high-stakes clash.
