At WrestleDream 2026, AEW debuted the Clockwork Carnage match, a high-stakes contest featuring the Men’s World Championship. Despite facing seven formidable opponents, champion Will Ospreay successfully defended his title by outscoring the field in this inaugural matchup. Fan-favorite AEW star wins the first-ever Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream 2026. Earlier this month, All Elite Wrestling had announced that the AEW Men’s World Championship would be defended at WrestleDream 2026 in a brand new match-type, called Clockwork Carnage. It was ultimately the champion Will Ospreay who outscored all of his challengers to successfully defend his strap at the PPV, despite the odds being stacked against his retention. The event was established following an earlier announcement that the championship would be decided through this new format. Eight stars earned their spots in the match by winning individual qualifying bouts: Samoa Joe, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, Ricochet, Adam Copeland, Darby Allin, and Ospreay.

Ospreay opened the match as the first entrant, quickly joined by Konosuke Takeshita. Mike Bailey entered third, briefly allowing Ospreay and Takeshita to align before Ricochet entered at number four and seized control of the ring. Darby Allin arrived fifth, utilizing his skateboard and a table to disrupt the momentum. After Takeshita incapacitated Allin, Ospreay downed Takeshita, leading into Kazuchika Okada’s entrance at number six. Following a series of eliminations—including Takeshita sending Bailey out of the match before being eliminated by Okada—Adam Copeland joined the fray as the seventh participant. With Konosuke Takeshita joining him as #2, the Aerial Assassin entered the initial elimination phase of Clockwork Carnage as the first entrant. The two stars kicked off the action with some heavy shots until they were joined by Mike Bailey as the third participant. And somehow managed to take control of the bout, ricochet then joined the fray at #4. Who in turn got taken down by Ospreay moments before Kazuchika Okada entered in the #6 spot, the TNT Champion eventually got incapacitated by Takeshita. The Japanese up-and-comer was eliminated himself by Okada, unfortunately.

Samoa Joe rounded out the field as the eighth entrant, immediately making an impact by dodging a dive from Ricochet. The second phase of the bout saw an intense exchange of falls. While most competitors struggled to keep pace, Allin and Ospreay eventually accumulated two points each. Samoa Joe pushed his score by submitting the champion with the Coquina Clutch, while Adam Copeland surged forward with a pair of spears. Albeit for a brief while, this allowed the United Empire members to work together to take down the Alpha.

In the final moments, Copeland evaded a Rainmaker from Okada and responded with another spear. However, with the clock expiring, Ospreay delivered a decisive Hidden Blade to Copeland. The pinfall secured Ospreay his third point of the night, sealing the victory and confirming his reign as the AEW Men’s World Champion. Following the match, a tense handshake between Copeland and Ospreay signaled that the challenger’s pursuit of the gold remains active.
