Pierre Gasly Claims Stunning Italian Grand Prix Pole Position at Monza

Update: 5 September 2026, 9:54:36 PM

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly delivered a standout performance to secure pole position at the Italian Grand Prix. Gasly, who famously claimed his only previous Formula 1 victory at the Monza circuit while driving for Red Bull’s junior team in 2020, edged out Mercedes’ George Russell by a narrow margin of 0.060 seconds.

Behind the front row, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified third. The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton followed in fourth and fifth, respectively, despite the team introducing an upgraded engine for the weekend. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished the session in sixth, while his teammate Lando Norris struggled to ninth place following a difficult qualifying run.

Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh. However, he is set to start the race from the back of the grid after receiving a penalty for the installation of a new engine.
