South Korea’s men’s hockey team experienced a bizarre moment of confusion on Friday during the Asian Games in Gifu, Japan. As the squad stood on the field at Green Stadium preparing for their match against Bangladesh, organizers inadvertently broadcast the national anthem of North Korea instead of the South Korean anthem.
The South Korean players appeared visibly puzzled as the music played over the stadium speakers. The announcer on-site quickly moved to address the error, stating, “We are really sorry, terribly sorry. National anthem for the Republic of Korea, we played a different song.”
The incident carries heightened sensitivity, as the North Korean anthem and other symbols associated with the state are prohibited in South Korea. The two nations technically remain at war, as the 1950-1953 Korean War concluded with an armistice agreement rather than a formal peace treaty.
The Asian Games organizing committee has yet to provide an official statement regarding the technical blunder. This incident follows reports of other organizational frustrations at the event, including complaints from the South Korean basketball team regarding room sizes and ongoing transportation issues affecting the men’s football team as they attempt to defend their championship title.
