Zimbabwe Women achieved a historic milestone at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday, recording their maiden ODI victory against West Indies. The four-wicket win in the second match of the series allowed the hosts to bounce back from their previous 99-run defeat, effectively leveling the three-game contest at 1-1 with 55 balls remaining.
After West Indies elected to bat first, they struggled against a disciplined Zimbabwean bowling attack. Nyasha Gwanzura was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 4 for 33. Her spell, which included the crucial dismissal of Hayley Matthews for 26, triggered a significant collapse that saw the tourists fall to 68/5. Support came from Francisca Chipare and Michelle Mavunga, who also kept pressure on the batting lineup. Despite a resilient 47 from Stafanie Taylor and a brief 26-run stand for the final wicket, West Indies were restricted to 139 all out in 39.3 overs. But responded with a much-improved bowling display after West Indies opted to bat, the hosts had been beaten by 99 runs in the opening ODI courtesy of Hayley Matthews’ record-breaking 182. Her dismissal to the excellent Nyasha Gwanzura (4 for 33) triggered a collapse that left the visitors struggling at 68/5 with Francis, the visitors lost Realeanna Grimmond early and although Matthews made 26 off 35 balls. West Indies soon slipped to 88 for 7 in the 24th over and veteran Stafanie Taylor needed to offer much-needed resistance to give the total some respectability. They were bowled out with more than 10 overs to spare.
The Zimbabwean chase saw a stable start from Modester Mupachikwa, who contributed 38 off 57 balls alongside Kelis Ndhlovu. Although Mupachikwa was dismissed at 67, she helped provide a solid platform. The innings faced a mid-order wobble as Zimbabwe slumped to 105/5 by the 29th over, losing both Beloved Biza and Chiedza Dhururu. West Indies sensed an opening, but captain Josephine Nkomo took control with a composed 30 off 58 balls. Hitting seven fours, and shared a half-century opening partnership with Kelis Ndhlovu, the keeper-bat made 38 off 57 balls.
Nkomo absorbed the pressure to keep the required run rate manageable. She anchored a vital partnership with Gwanzura, who added an unbeaten 18 to her match-winning bowling performance. Although Nkomo fell with the score at 133, Zimbabwe remained within reach and eventually crossed the target in 40.5 overs. Ashmini Munisar was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with 2 for 15, but it was not enough to prevent a landmark result for the home side. However, she found little support thereafter as Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept chipping away.
