Dame Esther Rantzen, the renowned broadcaster and founder of Childline, passed away at her residence in Bramshaw, within the New Forest of Hampshire, on September 30. More stories from Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.
The 86-year-old had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2023. Following a private funeral held last week, which her family described as an incredibly beautiful ceremony, a final note written by the campaigner was released to the public.
In the posthumous message, Rantzen expressed deep frustration with the existing legal framework surrounding end-of-life care. She stated that she had been deprived of any choice over her own death due to what she termed the current messy criminal law. She explained that she had become too physically frail to travel for assisted dying services, such as those provided at clinics in Switzerland.
Reflecting on her final days, she noted that while she felt extremely fortunate to have had the talent, skill, and support provided by her local Oakhaven Hospice, the situation would have been transformed if the law had permitted her to request assistance to die when her existence had become unbearable.
Rantzen had become a high-profile advocate for legalizing assisted dying during her later years, an issue that members of Parliament voted against earlier in September.
Her daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, shared that the family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support received since her mother’s passing. She noted that it has been hugely comforting to realize that people across the world shared the same deep affection for her mother that her family felt. Plans for a larger memorial service are expected to be announced at a later date. Watch the latest episode of South Today.
