Nscale has reaffirmed its dedication to constructing a £2bn AI data centre in Loughton, despite the departure of Microsoft from the project. The technology firm originally announced plans for the pioneering site last year, intending for it to become the largest of its kind in the UK.
While Microsoft had previously committed to funding a supercomputer at the Essex location, the tech giant has now ended its involvement. Microsoft declined to provide a formal comment regarding the decision.
Addressing the change, an Nscale spokesperson confirmed that the company is currently evaluating alternative power sources for the site and continues to explore further expansion opportunities across the UK. The firm stressed that its broader relationship with Microsoft remains secure, citing ongoing collaborations on international projects. “We remain committed to both the Loughton project and the UK,” the company stated, describing their partnership with Microsoft as strong and long-term.
