Everton advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a composed 3-1 victory over Newcastle United, setting up a clash against Fleetwood Town. The result marked a significant achievement for manager David Moyes, whose side produced a clinical performance to end Newcastle’s tournament hopes. The win was secured through goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Thierno Barry. The biggest night in Everton’s season started with a big call from David Moyes and demanded a big performance from his players. Andy Burnham was among the many Evertonians in attendance grateful for Newcastle’s generosity.
The match was defined by individual defensive lapses from the visitors, despite Newcastle controlling significant portions of the game. Statistics showed Newcastle registered 28 shots compared to Everton’s 11, though only nine of their attempts forced a save. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle described the result as “shocking” and labeled his squad “naive” for their defensive errors, while simultaneously rejecting claims that his team lacks toughness. Although only nine visiting attempts were on target – but individual defensive errors and an ineffective attack pro, newcastle dominated spells of the fourth round tie and the stats – registering 28 shots to Everton’s 11. Despite persuasive evidence to the contrary, yet called Newcastle “naive” and the defeat, in front of almost 8,000 of their fans, “shocking”, matthias Jaissle denied his team are a soft touch. However, he could not fault his defenders’ willingness to put their bodies on the line. The first, second and third goals were the same with individual mistakes. A triple half-time substitution from Jaissle was an unmistakable sign of discontent with Newcastle’s ineffective display at both ends of the pitch. The visitors were punished when Everton made the game safe in devastating style.
Building up to the game, the squad selection dominated headlines after Jack Grealish was dropped for disciplinary reasons. It is understood the 31-year-old missed training on Monday without authorization. Although Grealish returned to training later, Moyes opted to exclude him, stating it was “a club decision” reached alongside chief executive Angus Kinnear to emphasize that no individual is larger than the team. And the playmaker’s subsequent return to training, Moyes demonstrated that no player is bigger than the club by banishing the 31-year-old fro, despite the importance of the fixture and the limited options at his disposal. They did not let him down, with the exception of Jack Grealish. Ultimately, and no doubt to Grealish’s great relief, he was not missed.
Newcastle initially threatened, dominating the opening 20 minutes with Jordan Pickford forced into early saves against Harvey Barnes and Jacob Ramsey. However, the momentum shifted when a long clearance from Pickford pressured Amar Dedic into an error. Tyrique George intercepted the ball, feeding Hackney, who squared it for Garner to open the scoring. Jaissle later bemoaned the defensive failure, noting the team conceded out of nothing due to poor individual choices. Newcastle dominated the opening 20 minutes to the extent that a two-goal interval lead for Everton would have seemed inconceivable. Who then turned provider to set up Jacob Ramsey for a shot that was blocked superbly by Vitalii Mykolenko, pickford saved an early header from Harvey Barnes. Everton gradually turned the contest around. We need to be more efficient and learn fast.”. Pickford came in for his customary Sunderland stick from the Newcastle support.
Everton’s second goal arrived after a swift tactical transition involving Pickford, who threw the ball quickly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. After a strong run that saw him fouled by Ramsey, referee Farai Hallam played an advantage, allowing the ball to find Thierno Barry. Barry delivered a precise cross that Hackney finished with a close-range volley, deflating the visiting supporters. He responded in the best way possible; with a hand in a second goal that deflated the sizeable away section. The Everton keeper reacted sharply to launch a quick throw towards Dewsbury-Hall in the centre circle. Dewsbury-Hall spun away from Burn before embarking on a determined run that was halted by a trip from behind by Ramsey.
The second half saw continued pressure from Newcastle, with substitutes Yoane Wissa and Joe Willock creating opportunities, but Pickford remained resolute in goal. Everton effectively sealed the win when Garner intercepted a pass from Dedic and found Dewsbury-Hall, who teed up Barry to comfortably beat goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Late in the match, Fabian Schär’s teammate Dan Burn managed to head home a consolation goal from an Anthony Elanga cross. A brief scuffle involving Pickford, James Tarkowski, Joelinton, and Burn ensued, resulting in bookings for all four players, but the outcome remained secure. The quarter-final ties are scheduled for the week commencing 14 December. Leaving the England international raging at the lack of protection in front of him, fabian Schär also tested Pickford from distance.
