Reigning champion Marc Marquez moved a step closer to defending his MotoGP crown after clinching a dominant victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Ducati rider, who triumphed by more than four seconds, surged to 399 points in the standings, creating a commanding 44-point cushion over his primary rival, Jorge Martin. If Marquez can extend this lead to 74 points during the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, he will secure his eighth world championship with two rounds remaining.
The victory at the Sepang circuit marked Marquez’s first win at the venue since 2018.
Despite starting behind pole-sitter Alex Marquez, Marc quickly seized the initiative by beating his brother to the opening turn. And his brother made no mistakes from that point on to claim the chequered flag for the first time since 2018, alex Marquez was able to quickly regain the lead but ran wide a turn later to hand it back. “But my mentality still cannot change. But there are many moments left, there are not many races to go.
Although Alex briefly regained the front position, a momentary error at the following turn allowed Marc to reclaim the lead for good. Reflecting on his performance, the race winner stated, “We did a perfect race, so I’m super, super happy,” while emphasizing his need to maintain focus for the final stages of the season.
KTM’s Pedro Acosta, who claimed victory in Saturday’s sprint race, secured second place after a persistent battle with Alex Marquez. Acosta stayed close to the Gresini rider for several laps before executing a decisive overtake at the midpoint of the race, ultimately leaving Alex to finish third. Further back in the pack, Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi crossed the line in sixth, falling behind late-charging Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura and Tech3’s Enea Bastianini. By then, however, the distance to the leader had already grown too large to overcome.
The weekend proved disastrous for Jorge Martin’s championship hopes. The Aprilia rider, who won the title in 2024, attempted to test his fitness during Saturday morning’s practice but struggled significantly. After withdrawing from qualifying, he confirmed that his title challenge is effectively finished as he continues to recover from a wrist fracture sustained last week at Australia’s Phillip Island circuit.
The MotoGP calendar now shifts to the Lusail International Circuit for the Qatar Grand Prix. The event is scheduled to proceed next weekend, despite ongoing pushback from riders expressing concerns regarding the geopolitical climate as the United States-Israel war on Iran continues to develop.
