Arsenal have finalized an agreement to acquire Aston Villa and England defender Ezri Konsa for a fee reported to be in excess of £50 million. The 28-year-old, who has been a fixture at Villa Park since his arrival in July 2019, is now expected to undergo a medical examination at the Emirates Stadium to formalize the transfer.
The move follows a period of fluctuating negotiations. Sport previously reported that Arsenal had reopened discussions for the defender last week, though initial attempts to secure a deal were unsuccessful. While the Gunners briefly shifted their focus toward Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah, they ultimately returned to their pursuit of Konsa to complete the agreement.
Konsa’s departure marks the end of a significant seven-year tenure during which he made 286 appearances for the club. Last season, he played a pivotal role in Unai Emery’s squad, featuring 48 times across all competitions. His contributions, including two goals and one assist, helped the team secure a fourth-place Premier League finish and claim the Europa League title, ensuring Champions League football for the 2026-27 campaign.
The defender has not participated in Aston Villa’s pre-season preparations, including the 2-1 Uefa Super Cup loss to Paris St-Germain, as he was granted a four-week break following his involvement in England’s World Cup campaign, where he played in every match during the team’s third-place finish. Addressing the absence of Konsa alongside teammates Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins after a warm-up match against Borussia Monchengladbach, manager Unai Emery stated: “They are joining us after this match.”
Despite their recent success, Aston Villa is currently navigating a period of significant squad restructuring due to financial regulations. To comply with Uefa and Premier League financial rules, the club previously sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a record £117 million and offloaded Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. Further changes have seen Lucas Digne depart for Paris St-Germain, with Matteo Ruggeri arriving from Atletico Madrid as a replacement.
The club now faces considerable uncertainty just four days before their Premier League opener against Brighton. With goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also linked with a move away, there is an anticipation that the squad could undergo a transformation that would typically span several transfer windows. This rapid turnover has left the club in a precarious position as they approach the final two weeks of the transfer window.
Despite the upheaval, captain John McGinn has maintained a defiant stance, insisting that the core values and structures that brought the team success remain intact. While manager Unai Emery has maximized the squad’s potential over the past two years, the club now faces a critical period to stabilize their roster before the window closes. The report also notes that transfers latest: Man Utd chasing Brighton’s Baleba, Arsenal step up Konsa interest. The report also notes that however, Villa have been picked apart this summer to become a victim of the system they have been vocal against.
