Alexandra Eala has etched her name into tennis history, becoming the first player from the Philippines to capture a WTA Tour-level title. The 21-year-old achieved the milestone on Monday at the DC Open, mounting a resilient comeback to defeat American top seed Jessica Pegula with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The championship match, which was interrupted by rain on Sunday with Pegula leading 6-4, 1-2, resumed with Eala dominating the court. She secured the final eight games of the match to clinch the trophy. This victory marks a significant career high for Eala, propelling her into the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time. The win follows her previous appearance in a WTA Tour-level final at Eastbourne in 2025.
Eala’s path to the title was marked by high-level performances against the tournament’s elite. Beyond her victory over Pegula, she successfully navigated past No. 3 seed Naomi Osaka in the semifinals and No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals. Tournament chairman Mark Ein noted the immense support for the young star, stating that nearly all ticket inquiries leading up to the event were centered on Eala.
Reflecting on the overwhelming support from the Filipino community in Washington D.C. and across the globe, Eala expressed deep gratitude. “To all my supporters, especially the Filipino community, here in DC and back home and wherever you are in the world, I feel all the love,” she said. She added that the outpouring of messages from friends and family helped her maintain perspective, noting, “I thought to myself, ‘I feel so much love.’ So standing here in the middle of all this love, my first chance at the title knowing it won’t be my last… I knew that whatever would have happened after this match it would have already been a win for me.”
During the trophy presentation, Pegula praised her opponent’s rapid development and the vibrant atmosphere created by her fans. “You’re an amazing player,” Pegula told Eala. “Just to see how far you’ve come over the last couple of years when we first played, to see the amazing fans that follow you every single place you go. It’s not fun to play against, but I do appreciate the really fun atmosphere. I do. I think it’s amazing, so congrats.” The report also notes that it was worth the wait for Alexandra Eala, while it took an extra day.
