Amit Mishra Returns to Delhi Capitals as Spin Bowling

Veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra has rejoined Delhi Capitals in a new role as spin bowling coach. The appointment comes as part of a major backroom reshuffle for the franchise, which recently named Sourav Ganguly as head coach, Yuvraj Singh as assistant coach, and Chaminda Vaas as fast bowling coach.

Mishra boasts extensive tournament experience, appearing in 162 IPL games across 16 seasons since the league’s inaugural edition in 2008. He began his career with the franchise during its tenure as Delhi Daredevils and spent 10 seasons with the team. Last featuring as an active player in 2024, Mishra took 174 IPL wickets overall, including a best spell of 5 for 17. Having played 162 matches across 16 seasons, starting all the way back in the inaugural edition in 2008, mishra has rich IPL experience. He started out at the same franchise – called Delhi Daredevils then – and played 10 of his seasons with them.

He remains the only bowler in IPL history to claim three hat-tricks, achieving the feat for three distinct franchises: Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Deccan Chargers in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. Coincidentally, new assistant coach Yuvraj Singh is one of only two players with two IPL hat-tricks, having secured both in 2009. His fellow support staff member is one of two cricketers with two hattricks in IPL (Yuvraj Singh in 2009), coincidentally.

Mishra’s guidance will directly benefit newly acquired left-arm wrist-spinner Zeeshan Ansari, who arrived via a trade with SRH that sent T Natarajan in the opposite direction. Leg-spinners Vipraj Nigam and Rehan Ahmed are also set to gain from his mentorship if retained by the franchise for the upcoming season.
