Busted musician James Bourne has revealed he underwent a life-saving kidney transplant, with his younger brother Chris serving as the donor. The 43-year-old guitarist shared that he had been given a prognosis of only a few years left to live before the procedure, which he described as essential to extending his life.

The health crisis forced Bourne to withdraw from a highly anticipated arena tour alongside his bandmates and McFly in September 2025. At the time, his brother Chris stepped in to cover his duties for the duration of the tour. James has now expressed deep gratitude for his sibling, calling him a “hero” and confirming that both men are currently recovering well from the surgeries. The guitarist, 43, dropped out of an arena tour featuring his band and fellow punk-pop favourites McFly in September 2025, just a day before it began.

Medical and Career Context

  • Current Status: Both brothers are recovering from successful transplant operations
  • Condition: Bourne stated his medical situation was serious, with doctors estimating limited life expectancy prior to the procedure
  • Tour Impact: James withdrew from a 2025 arena tour one day before its commencement
  • Replacement: Chris Bourne performed on tour in his brother’s place

Writing on social media, James reflected on the sudden shift in his life, noting how quickly he went from preparing for a tour to facing a major health challenge. His brother Chris also marked the successful outcome with a short, personal message on X, stating simply: “We did it brother.” While James confirmed the transplant, he has not provided further specific details regarding his underlying medical condition.

James Bourne rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a founding member of Busted, alongside Charlie Simpson and Matt Willis. The band achieved significant commercial success with eight top 10 hits between 2002 and 2004, including four number-one singles such as “What I Go To School For,” “Year 3000,” and “Crashed the Wedding” before their initial split in 2005.

Following his time in Busted, Bourne has maintained an active career in music.

He fronted his own band, Son of Dork, and frequently collaborated as a songwriter for acts including McFly and 5 Seconds of Summer.

He also co-founded the supergroup McBusted with Willis and McFly in 2013 before participating in the full Busted reunion with Simpson in 2015. Most recently, Bourne has been involved in musical theater, releasing the soundtrack for his stage musical Murder at the Gates.
