Duane “Keffe D” Davis has received a sentence of at least 40 years behind bars for his part in orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that claimed the life of rap icon Tupac Shakur. The 63-year-old was found guilty this past September on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon, marking a significant legal milestone in a case that has remained a focal point for hip-hop enthusiasts for nearly three decades. Davis’ conviction was the first in a cold case that has intrigued hip-hop fans for nearly 30 years.

Prosecutors established that while Davis did not pull the trigger himself, he served as the group’s ringleader during the attack in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. In his own memoir, Davis previously admitted to providing the firearm used in the incident. During the sentencing hearing, Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo criticized the defendant for his history of “publicly grandstanding” and boasting about his involvement in an event that had far-reaching global consequences.

This conviction serves as the first successful prosecution in the long-standing cold case. Despite the court’s ruling and the significant term handed down, Davis has indicated his intention to challenge the verdict through an appeal.
