Liverpool FC Owners Announce Minority Stake Sale to Consortium Including Jeff Bezos

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has entered into a definitive agreement to sell a minority stake in Liverpool FC to a consortium known as 1892 Holdings. The investment group is led by former Queens Park Rangers chairman Amit Bhatia and includes the Mittal Family Trusts, EE Capital, and the K5 Sports fund, where Amazon founder Jeff Bezos serves as the lead investor. According to a source familiar with the transaction, the stake being acquired represents approximately one-third of the club.

FSG, the American multinational sports firm that acquired Liverpool in 2010, will retain operational control and a majority share of the club. FSG president Mike Gordon welcomed the new partners in a statement on Friday, noting that the consortium shares the organization’s long-term philosophy. “Their experience and perspective will complement the strong foundation already in place and we look forward to working together,” Gordon stated.

As part of the restructuring, Amit Bhatia will join the club’s expanded board as vice chairman. He will be joined on the board by Elaine Saverin of EE Capital and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports. While Bezos is a key investor in the consortium, he will not hold a seat on the board. Expressing his enthusiasm for the deal, Bhatia remarked, “To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for years to come.”

Liverpool, which holds a joint-record 20 English league titles, finished fifth in the Premier League last season. The club is currently preparing for the upcoming campaign, which begins with a match against Newcastle United on August 23 under the guidance of new manager Andoni Iraola.
