Max Verstappen Extends Red Bull Contract Through 2030, Ending Exit Speculation

Update: 20 August 2026, 5:33:24 PM

Max Verstappen has officially silenced rumors regarding his Formula One future by signing a contract extension with Red Bull that keeps him with the team through the 2030 season. The 28-year-old driver, a four-time world champion, had previously been subject to intense speculation linking him to potential moves to Mercedes or McLaren. He had also openly expressed frustration with the sport’s new regulations, which he felt negatively impacted the enjoyment of racing, leading to suggestions he might consider an early retirement.

The announcement comes just ahead of Verstappen’s home race at the Dutch Grand Prix. His previous agreement was slated to expire at the end of 2028, though it reportedly contained performance-based break clauses that could have allowed for an earlier departure. By committing to this new long-term deal, Verstappen has reaffirmed his loyalty to the team he has driven for since his promotion from Toro Rosso in 2016.

Reflecting on the decision, Verstappen described the team as a second family where he feels entirely at home. “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again,” he stated. “I have always said it: the team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home. What we went on to achieve together has been simply lovely and we have shared many incredible moments and won four world championships.”

The current season has proven challenging for Red Bull, as the team struggles to adapt to new regulations while Mercedes has surged forward with a more dominant car. Verstappen currently sits sixth in the world championship standings, trailing leader Kimi Antonelli by 110 points. Despite these difficulties and his vocal criticism of the energy management requirements in the current car specifications, the Dutchman remains confident in the team’s ability to recover.

Verstappen also highlighted his faith in team principal Laurent Mekies, who succeeded Christian Horner in July of last year. “Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen noted. “Everyone in Milton Keynes believes in what we are building and I am looking forward to the next chapter, fighting for more victories and competing for championships as we continue to shape the future of this team.”

Mekies praised the importance of retaining the driver who secured four consecutive titles between 2021 and 2024. “Very few partnerships in sport achieve what Max and this team have,” Mekies said. “Since the very beginning, Max has embodied everything that makes Oracle Red Bull Racing special: uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention. His impact on our team and on Red Bull’s motor sport story has been transformational, and he has been fundamental to everything we have accomplished together.” The report also notes that however, going into his home race this weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, the 28-year-old and Red Bull announced that they would continue what has been an enormously successful partnership to the end of the decade. The report also notes that “This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue.
