Trinbago Knight Riders successfully launched their Caribbean Premier League title defense with a 19-run victory over the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, decided by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. Despite the absence of key players Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard, the Knight Riders dominated the match at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent. After electing to field, they restricted the Patriots to a modest total of 109/9. The chase was interrupted by rain, but TKR had reached 94/2 in 15 overs when the final downpour halted play, securing their first points of the campaign.
Sunil Narine was the standout performer, delivering an exceptionally miserly spell of 3/7 across his four overs. Continuing his strong form from the recent MLC season, Narine dismantled the top order during the Powerplay, claiming two wickets in the second over and adding a third in the fourth. Although Johnson Charles and Kevin Wickham attempted to stabilize the innings with a 24-run partnership, the Patriots collapsed to 47/6 within 11 overs after losing three wickets in a span of just 10 balls.
A rain delay lasting over 50 minutes failed to shift the momentum. Kevin Wickham anchored the recovery with a 38-run effort off 44 balls, while contributions from Ashmead Nedd and Obed McCoy helped the Patriots reach triple figures. Nevertheless, 109 remained a below-par score on the slow surface. In response, TKR lost openers Alex Hales and Colin Munro early in the Powerplay. Joshua Da Silva and Matthew Breetzke then focused on rotating the strike, keeping the required run rate well under control. Breetzke eventually found the boundary with a four and a six, while Da Silva retired hurt due to fatigue following the 13th over.
The match concluded when rain returned with TKR needing 16 runs from the final five overs. Being 19 runs ahead on the DLS par score, the Knight Riders were declared winners. In the final scorecard, the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots finished at 109/9, while the Trinbago Knight Riders stood at 94/2. Supporting Narine’s bowling figures were Terrance Hinds with 3/33 and Dominic Drakes with 2/20, while Jason Holder claimed 1/13 for the Patriots.
