Lucy Davis, the actress best known for portraying receptionist Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, has announced that she has been diagnosed with incurable stage 4 breast cancer. The 53-year-old performer, who is the daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, starred as the office receptionist in the groundbreaking sitcom, which ran from 2001 to 2003.
A post from the actress on Instagram this Tuesday shared the difficult news: “I wanted to share something with you all that I’ve kept to myself for a while but for various reasons would like to share now.” Davis revealed that she was diagnosed a year-and-a-half ago and that the cancer has metastasized to her bones, specifically affecting her spine, right hip, and ribs. She noted that the condition is currently considered incurable and too late for chemotherapy.
Reflecting on the early signs of her illness, Davis explained that the initial symptom was not a traditional lump, but rather a tiny, hard spot. She admitted that she almost ignored the change, leading her to issue a public plea: “So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything – get everything checked out.”
Regarding her outlook, Davis expressed a desire to maintain her quality of life for as long as possible. “As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can,” she wrote. She added that she is not afraid of the future and feels at peace, noting that she intends to continue her advocacy for animal rights, a cause she describes as deeply important to her.
Davis also shared her intention to keep working, stating that acting remains one of the greatest joys in her life and that she is still capable of performing. Her announcement was accompanied by a video showing her ringing a bell in a hospital setting, a traditional gesture for patients completing or marking stages of their treatment journey.
Birmingham-born Davis gained fame as the love interest of Tim Canterbury, played by Martin Freeman, in the Ricky Gervais comedy classic. The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Following her time on The Office, she appeared as Dianne in the 2004 film Shaun of the Dead, Etta Candy in 2017’s Wonder Woman, and Hilda Spellman in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. More recently, she appeared in the Disney Channel series The Villains of Valley View.
According to Cancer Research UK, stage four breast cancer occurs when the disease spreads from the breast tissue to other parts of the body, rendering it incurable, though treatment can often manage the disease for several years. The NHS advises that common symptoms include lumps or swelling in the breast, chest, or armpit.
Other warning signs identified by health officials include changes in skin texture, such as dimpling or redness, alterations in the size or shape of the breasts, or nipple discharge that may contain blood. Changes to the appearance of the nipple, such as inversion or rashes, are also potential indicators that require medical evaluation.
Davis concluded her message with a note of solidarity for others facing similar health battles. “For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well. Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose.”
