Stephanie Cole, an esteemed actress celebrated for her iconic performances across British television and theater, has died at the age of 84. Her agent, John Grant, released a statement on behalf of her family confirming that the actress had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years.

Beyond her professional achievements, she was also recognized for her dedicated advocacy on behalf of mental health charities and services for the elderly.
Born in Solihull, Cole trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Her early career showcased her range, including a notable stage debut at 17 when she played the 90-year-old medium Madame Arcati in a production of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. She revisited this debut role in 2004, performing in a West End revival at the Savoy Theatre at the age of 63.
The actress gained widespread recognition in the 1980s for her breakout performance as Dr. Beatrice Mason in drama Tenko. The series depicted the harrowing experiences of British women held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Singapore after the invasion. During that same decade, she established her comedic credentials as Mrs. Delphine Featherstone, or the Black Widow, in the Ronnie Barker sitcom Open All Hours, a role she later reprised for the 2010s reboot Still Open All Hours.
Her extensive career included award-winning work in various genres. She won the best TV comedy actress award for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued photojournalist Diana Trent in Waiting For God. A decade later, she married fellow actor Peter Birrel. Their relationship began decades after they first performed together in a 1960s production of Richard II at the Bristol Old Vic. Birrel died in 2004, and Cole is survived by her daughter from her first marriage, Emma Battcock.
For her significant contributions to drama and charitable causes, Cole was appointed an OBE in 2005.
