MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell College, died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency on the sidelines during the Division II school’s season opener against Fort Lewis College. The incident occurred shortly after Barnett scored a touchdown, leading to his transport by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Liberty, Missouri, police confirmed that emergency personnel stationed at the game provided immediate assistance to the student-athlete approximately 20 minutes after kickoff. While authorities have not released specific details regarding the nature of the emergency, the college officially confirmed the loss of the student-athlete. In a tribute on its athletics website, the school featured a black-and-white photograph of Barnett with the memorial inscription, “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete MicahJo Barnett,” alongside the words “Forever a Cardinal” and the years 2005-2026.
Game statistics indicate that Barnett had been a central figure in the match before play was suspended. He recorded a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. At the time the game was halted with 4:32 left in the quarter, Barnett had accumulated 30 yards on six carries. Following the tragedy, William Jewell officials urged students and staff to utilize the school’s chaplaincy and counseling services, and a vigil was scheduled for Saturday evening to honor Barnett and his family.
Before joining William Jewell, where he was entering his third season, the Shawnee Mission, Kansas, native was a standout at Liberty North High School. During his senior year there, he achieved 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns, earning all-Missouri state honors as part of a state championship-winning team. Over his first two seasons at the college level, Barnett appeared in 13 games, totaling 108 carries for 457 yards and six touchdowns. “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the college stated. The report also notes that police in Liberty, Missouri, issued a statement that said emergency officials on hand at the game attended to a player about 20 minutes after kickoff, without providing many details.
