Argentina football legend Lionel Messi bid a final farewell on Sunday to his father, Jorge, who passed away at age 68 following a battle with cancer. Jorge Messi had served as the global star’s primary emotional anchor and agent since his childhood.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner arrived in Argentina late Saturday on a private flight from Miami, accompanied by his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their children. A private funeral ceremony was held on Sunday at a cemetery in the town of Perez, near Rosario, attended by close family members and several of Messi’s Argentina teammates.
Following the announcement that Jorge Messi died late Friday at a Rosario clinic, teammates rallied to support their captain. Outside the El Prado cemetery, fans left a large floral wreath and handwritten messages of support, including notes reading, “Stay strong, Leo, we love you” and “Stay strong, Messi family.”
