The London premiere of The Gentlemen’s second season on Wednesday night brought together the show’s stars, who faced questions regarding recent reports that the Duchess of Sussex may be in talks for a role in the hit Netflix drama. While the production has officially been greenlit for a third season, the cast and crew remained largely tight-lipped about the possibility of Meghan joining the ensemble.
Theo James, who stars as Eddie Halstead, dismissed the speculation as rumor, telling reporters, “It’s fascinating to watch, but ultimately it’s a lot of rumor.” He jokingly added, “Prince Harry’s in it. He’s playing one of my love interests.” Maya Jama, another newcomer to the series, noted that she would be the last person to know about casting decisions, adding that she would have no advice for the Duchess, stating, “She’s a seasoned actor. She knows what she’s doing.”
Vinnie Jones, who also appears in the show, remarked that he had heard “only what you have” regarding the reports. In the upcoming second season, the criminal enterprise expands from the British countryside to the lakeside settings of Italy. James noted that the team worked hard to evolve the world of the show, aiming for more complexity and character development.
Scodelario, who portrays the formidable cannabis farm operator Susie Glass, added that the new episodes aim to raise the stakes. “Some of the episodes take a much darker turn, but we still have the fun and the joy that everyone really liked about it,” she said.
Hugh Bonneville, a new addition to the cast, described the experience of working with Ritchie as “wonderfully chaotic, but with a great purpose in mind.” Reflecting on the show’s depiction of the aristocracy, the former Downton Abbey star joked that the two worlds were not so different. “No, it was fun to enter this slightly skewed world of the perverted aristocracy up to no good,” he said, adding, “I’m sure it was going on at Downton Abbey, but now the lid is lifted on what really happens in these stately homes.”
The premiere, held at London’s Guildhall, also featured appearances by Joely Richardson and Ray Winstone. The second season of The Gentlemen is scheduled for release on Netflix on 3 September.
