Thousands of devoted Queen fans descended upon Montreux, Switzerland, on Saturday to commemorate what would have been the 80th birthday of legendary singer Freddie Mercury. Attendees from as far as Australia and Japan gathered at the iconic bronze statue of the frontman, which overlooks Lake Geneva, to celebrate his enduring legacy.
The statue, erected in 1996, served as the focal point of the festivities, adorned with flowers, balloons, and personal tributes. Many fans arrived in elaborate costumes, recreating Mercury’s most famous stage looks, including his iconic 1986 Magic Tour yellow jacket, “Flash Gordon” attire, and the black-and-white leggings from his 39th birthday celebration.
“It is a special birthday, so you’ve got to make the effort to come and celebrate all things Freddie,” said Sonia, a fan who traveled from Canberra to attend. The event, known as Freddie Days, has been held annually since 2003. Volunteer organizer Lucien Muller noted that the five-day celebration was expected to draw between 14,000 and 16,000 visitors, describing the gathering as a family rather than just a community.
The town of Montreux held deep significance for the singer, who sought peace there during his final years and recorded his last vocals at Mountain Studios, located within the Montreux Casino. The studio, which saw the recording of six Queen albums, is now an exhibition space where visitors can interact with the original mixing desk. James Perkin, a guitarist for the tribute band Don’t Stop Queen Now, reflected on the emotional weight of the location while testing the equipment on “A Winter’s Tale,” the final song Mercury wrote.
Public appreciation for Queen and Mercury’s unique talent has surged since his death in 1991 from bronchial pneumonia, a complication of AIDS. Remarkably, the majority of the band’s total record sales have occurred since the singer’s passing at age 45. This renewed interest has been bolstered by the 2018 Oscar-winning biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which introduced his music to a new generation.
The celebration featured various concerts and discussions, including a session focused on “Barcelona,” the 1988 collaborative album Mercury recorded with opera star Montserrat Caballe. Composer Mike Moran, who co-wrote the project, shared his thoughts on the enduring adoration: “He would have been amazed that people still come from all over the world in such large numbers to celebrate—he’d have loved it; he loved being idolised!—though he’d have hated being 80!”
Longtime fans, such as Julie Criddle from Wiltshire, who attended the 1977 video shoot for “We Are The Champions,” noted the influx of younger admirers. “There’s so many people here that aren’t old enough to have seen Queen live, which is fantastic because it’s keeping Freddie’s name alive,” she said.
Reflecting on the atmosphere, Mercury’s friend and fellow performer Peter Straker remarked, “He’s dead, but the spirit lives on, and the joy and celebration of a human life—it’s fantastic.” The day’s events concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony led by the singer’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, as fans sang “Happy Birthday” and continued the party well into the night.
