Friday marked the 28th anniversary of the classic Bollywood romance ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.’ To celebrate the milestone, Kajol revisited her iconic character, Anjali, sharing images of herself in a red jacket, sporting short hair and minimal makeup to offer a glimpse of how the character might appear today. She humorously captioned the post, “Can magic ever be recreated? Here’s Anjali a couple of years later.” One of Bollywood’s most iconic movies, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (KKHH), completed 28 years since its release on Friday.
Director Karan Johar also participated in the celebration, posting a commemorative video on Instagram that featured behind-the-scenes footage and musical sequences.
The clip opened with Shah Rukh Khan’s famous line, “Pyaar dosti hai,” and concluded with his memorable dialogue, “Hum ek baar jeete hain, ek baar marte hain, shaadi bhi ek baar hoti hai, aur pyaar bhi ek baar hota hai. Johar captioned the tribute, “Our ode to everything pyaar & dosti. Happy #28YearsOfKuchKuchHotaHai to all of us! Additionally, he shared a brief “28 years” note on his Instagram Stories. Dropping the nostalgic video on his Insta Stories, KJo simply wrote, “28 years” followed by some heart emoticons.
Released in 1998 as Karan Johar’s directorial debut, the film features Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, Kajol as Anjali, Rani Mukerji as Tina, and Salman Khan in the role of Aman. The movie remains a fan favorite, bolstered by popular tracks composed by Jatin-Lalit, including the title track, “Koi Mil Gaya,” and “Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai.” The first directorial venture of Karan Johar, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ holds a special place in the hearts of movie buffs even now.
Kajol’s career trajectory is closely linked to her collaborations with Shah Rukh Khan. The daughter of Tanuja and Shomu Mukherjee, she debuted in the 1992 film ‘Bekhudi’ while still a student. After leaving her studies, she achieved early success with ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Yeh Dillagi.’ Her work in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ solidified her as a leading star of the 1990s, earning her two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. During that decade, she also earned acclaim for her performances in ‘Gupt: The Hidden Truth’ and ‘Dushman.’ And had commercial successes in Baazigar (1993), opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and Yeh Dillagi (1994), she subsequently quit her studies. Starring roles with Khan in the top-grossing romances Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) established her as a leading star in the 1990s and earned her two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. She also gained critical appreciation for playing a psychopathic killer in Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997) and an avenger in Dushman (1998).
Following her role in ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’ in 2001, which secured her a third Filmfare win, Kajol transitioned away from full-time acting for a period. She later returned to win two additional Best Actress Filmfare awards for her performances in ‘Fanaa’ and ‘My Name Is Khan.’ In more recent years, her career saw major commercial success with ‘Dilwale’ in 2015 and the period film ‘Tanhaji’ in 2020. Which won her a third Filmfare Award, Kajol took a sabbatical from full-time acting and worked infrequently over the next decades, after starring in the family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001).
