Bangladesh’s state minister for youth and sports, Aminul Haque, expressed optimism on Monday that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding India’s proposed cricket tour of Bangladesh this September will be resolved shortly. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been monitoring the situation closely, as political tensions between the two nations have cast doubt on the future of the series.
Speculation regarding a potential breakdown in relations intensified after ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several of her party members held a virtual press conference from Delhi on August 5. However, speaking on the sidelines of a football match in Dhaka on August 10, Aminul dismissed the notion that the incident had damaged bilateral sporting ties. “No, no, no… I don’t think so,” he stated, emphasizing that sports serve as a vital bridge for fostering positive relationships between neighboring countries.
To address the logistical and diplomatic hurdles, Aminul confirmed that he has been in active communication with the Foreign Minister. He noted that the matter is being handled at the highest levels of government, with direct dialogue occurring between the foreign ministries of both nations. “It is being worked on at the ministerial level. I have already spoken to the Foreign Minister today, and they are also talking to the Indian Foreign Minister,” he explained, adding that the government is eager to move past the tensions that emerged during the recent World Cup.
A positive development occurred earlier on Monday when the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tareque Rahman. This meeting provided a sense of relief for the BCB, as it signaled a path toward reconciliation. Aminul reiterated that the government remains committed to maintaining cordial and friendly relations with India, including the continuation of bilateral cricket fixtures. “We are very hopeful that the tension that arose over the last World Cup will be resolved soon. We want to maintain the cordiality and friendly relationship between Bangladesh and India, and Inshallah, we are hopeful that this problem will be resolved very soon,” he concluded.
