Ed Sheeran, one of the most successful musicians in history with over 120 million records sold and more than 1,000 weeks on US album charts, is grappling with a significant professional crisis. The controversy centers on his decision to remove support act Macklemore from his US stadium tour following the rapper’s explicit on-stage comments regarding the conflict in Gaza.
However, the singer does lean politically left. In 2017, he supported former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He told the Sunday Times that while he did not campaign for Corbyn at the stump, those familiar with his music and personality would recognize his alignment. He has long viewed his concerts as a place of safety and sanctuary built on shared humanity.
That approach has been severely tested during the current tour. During the initial show, Macklemore delivered a pro-Palestinian speech and displayed imagery depicting destruction in Gaza. By the next night, he described the death toll as a genocide—a characterization that Israel has rejected. The comments drew sharp condemnation, including from StopAntisemitism, which accused the rapper of ambushing the concert audience.
Reports indicate that stadium owners, led by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, pressured Sheeran and his promoters to terminate Macklemore’s involvement. Following a week of private negotiations, the decision to drop the rapper was confirmed on Tuesday.
In a formal statement, Sheeran clarified that the decision originated from the tour promoters rather than himself. He noted that he attempted to mediate between the conflicting parties without success. Addressing concerns regarding his neutrality, he denied being complicit, arguing that his public silence on the Middle East does not equate to indifference.
Sheeran stated, “I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy.” He further explained that he avoids using his platform for political statements because his concerts are attended by young people, including children, from a wide variety of backgrounds.
