Kelsey Mitchell etched her name into the WNBA record books on Tuesday, matching A’ja Wilson’s league-best streak of 20 consecutive games with at least 20 points. Mitchell finished the night with 29 points before being sidelined for the fourth quarter. Her Indiana Fever teammates rallied to secure a 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo, marking the team’s fifth straight win.
The milestone performance was cut short when Mitchell headed to the locker room after scoring eight points in less than a minute late in the third quarter. Fever coach Stephanie White clarified after the game that Mitchell was not suffering from a serious injury, but rather appeared to get “overheated” due to the hot playing environment.
Caitlin Clark contributed 24 points and seven assists in the win, while Aliyah Boston added 16 points and Sophie Cunningham chipped in 13 off the bench. Clark and Mitchell have now combined for 20 or more points in the same game 16 times this season, setting a new WNBA record by surpassing the 15-game mark previously held by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter from 2008.
The Fever (24-12) dominated early, shooting 61.9% in the first quarter to build a 33-23 lead. Although the Tempo (10-24) briefly narrowed the gap to six points in the second quarter, Indiana responded with an 11-0 run. By halftime, Indiana held a 57-49 advantage, having shot 59% from the field compared to Toronto’s 42.2%.
Toronto attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, with Marina Mabrey leading the charge with 22 points. After Mabrey hit consecutive baskets early in the third quarter to trim the deficit to four, Mitchell reached her 20-point threshold with a driving layup at the 6:03 mark. Despite a late 3-pointer from Temi Fagbenle, Indiana closed the third quarter on a 9-2 surge to lead 81-69.
The Fever’s lead extended to 14 points in the fourth quarter following three free throws by Cunningham. However, Indiana’s offensive rhythm stalled, allowing the Tempo to pull within seven points with 2:55 remaining. A crucial steal by Makayla Timpson set up a Cunningham 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to 10 with 85 seconds left.
Toronto made a final push when Mabrey sank two consecutive 3-pointers to bring the score to 97-93 with 59 seconds on the clock. The Tempo had a chance to narrow the gap further after a Fever miss, but a palming violation against Mabrey and a subsequent foul by Kiki Rice effectively ended the comeback bid.
The Tempo, who have now lost 11 consecutive games, saw Brittney Sykes return from a foot injury to score 15 points. Reserve Aneesah Morrow recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Fagbenle added 13 and Rice finished with 10. Overall, the Fever outshot the Tempo 52.9% to 39.1% to secure the result. The report also notes that while Caitlin Clark added 24 points for the Indiana Fever to beat the Toronto T, kelsey Mitchell tied a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) record when she finished with 29 points before sitting out the fourth.
