Marina Mabrey delivered a historic performance on Thursday night, matching the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points in the Toronto Tempo’s 125-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Mabrey’s achievement ties the league record previously set by Liz Cambage in 2018 and matched by A’ja Wilson in 2023.
The 29-year-old former Notre Dame standout was lethal from the floor, shooting 17-of-28 overall and hitting nine of 18 attempts from beyond the arc to tie the WNBA record for three-pointers in a single game. She also converted 10 of 12 free throws, easily surpassing the previous franchise high of 38 points, which had been set twice by Brittney Sykes.
As Mabrey exited the game with one minute remaining, the crowd initially booed before transitioning into cheers, eventually chanting, “We Want Mabrey! We Want Mabrey!” as the final seconds ticked away. Teammate Julie Allemand supported the effort with 13 points and 14 assists in what became the highest-scoring game in the expansion team’s history.
For the Sparks, Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each contributed 21 points in the loss. The result brings Toronto back to a.500 record at 9-9, while Los Angeles drops to 8-9. The Tempo are currently beginning a nine-game homestand that includes two upcoming appearances at Montreal’s Bell Centre.
