Pakistan women’s cricket captain Fatima Sana has been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council following an incident during her team’s Asia Cup group stage match against India. The 22-year-old leader, who became the youngest captain in the team’s history in October 2024, was fined 10 percent of her match fee on Monday. The penalty was issued two days after India secured a dominant seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the regional tournament.
The disciplinary action stems from a gesture Sana directed toward the pavilion after dismissing Indian batter Shafali Verma via a caught-and-bowled play. Verma had contributed 12 runs from six deliveries before her exit. Sana admitted to breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from using language, actions, or gestures that disparage an opponent or could incite an aggressive reaction from a batter upon their dismissal.
In addition to the financial penalty, the ICC added one demerit point to Sana’s disciplinary record. This marks her second such offense within a 24-month window, following a previous violation during a T20I match against Ireland in August 2025. Under current ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches allow for penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a maximum of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, alongside one or two demerit points.
While India has advanced to the semifinals with an unbeaten record, Pakistan continues its campaign, including a match against Hong Kong. The tournament remains a significant stage for both nations; India holds a record seven Asia Cup titles, most recently winning in 2022. Conversely, Pakistan has yet to claim the trophy, having finished as runners-up to their neighbors in both 2012 and 2016. The report also notes that verma scored 12 runs off six balls as India demolished Pakistan by seven wickets to remain unbeaten in the competition.
