Director Shekhar Kapur is set to revisit his 1983 cinematic masterpiece, Masoom, with an upcoming sequel titled Masoom: The Next Generation. While original leads Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi are slated to return, the project has gained further attention with the confirmation that Jugal Hansraj, who played the young Rahul in the original film, will also be joining the cast.
Reflecting on the reunion, Kapur expressed that returning to this story feels like coming home. He noted that welcoming Hansraj back as an established actor, after having directed him as a small child, is both a deeply emotional and rewarding experience. Kapur emphasized that the new chapter aims to capture the same sincerity and emotional resonance that made the original film a timeless classic for audiences over the decades.
For Hansraj, the role in Masoom marked his debut as a child artist, where his portrayal of Rahul fundamentally shifted the family dynamics within the narrative. He shared his excitement about the project, recalling the moment Kapur called him to offer the role. Hansraj noted that even after more than 40 years, he remains identified as the “Masoom boy.” He recounted how, even in New York, strangers often approach him to share how their children and grandchildren still listen to the iconic song “Lakdi Ki Kathi,” treating him like a member of their own family.
Described as a spiritual successor to the original, Masoom: The Next Generation will explore contemporary family dynamics, identity crises, and the evolving nature of relationships across generations. The film promises to bridge the past and present, bringing together a cast that includes Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur, the daughter of the director.
The production has also secured Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who is serving as both a co-producer and the music director for the project. While the anticipation surrounding the film continues to grow, the official release date for the sequel has not yet been announced.
