Jessica Pegula secured her place in the US Open semifinals after a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Emma Navarro on Tuesday. The third-seeded American needed two hours and 20 minutes to overcome her opponent in a grueling baseline battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium, which featured nine service breaks. Pegula, who remains undefeated in five career meetings with Navarro, successfully rallied after dropping an early break in the deciding set.
Reflecting on the intensity of the match, Pegula admitted the conditions were challenging. “It was really tough,” she said. “It was physical, humid. I wasn’t exactly serving my best, and I was fighting a lot of demons out there today.” Her opponent, Navarro, is currently climbing the rankings after returning from a hiatus to address health concerns, having secured her first title in over a year at Strasbourg this past May.
The victory sets up a high-stakes semifinal clash on Thursday against Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked player and two-time defending champion. Sabalenka has previously defeated Pegula in both the 2024 Flushing Meadows final and last year’s semifinal round. For the 32-year-old Pegula, who has claimed two titles this season, winning her first major championship is the only path to potentially overtaking Sabalenka for the world number one ranking.
However, the race for the top spot remains fluid. While Pegula is one of three contenders in New York capable of unseating the leader, the ranking could be decided before she even takes the court on Thursday. Second-ranked Elena Rybakina has the opportunity to claim the number one position regardless of other outcomes if she defeats China’s Zheng Qinwen in their quarterfinal match scheduled for Wednesday. The report also notes that a former world number eight who is on the rise after an extended break to focus on health issues, winning her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, pegula improved to 5-0 against Navarro.
