A train has derailed in Essex, less than 24 hours after two people were seriously injured in a similar incident in East Sussex. British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the rear carriages of the train derailed “in an upright position” at Wickford railway station, adding that there were “no reported injuries”.
A post on the National Rail website stated there was a “problem currently under investigation between Wickford and Southend Victoria,” resulting in all lines being closed between these stations. Consequently, trains running between London Liverpool Street and Southend Victoria were unable to operate, with major disruption “expected to continue until further notice.”
A spokesperson for the rail operator added: “We are dealing with a derailment incident in Anglia, and we are working quickly to understand the situation and to provide assistance where needed. We will provide further information in due course.”
This incident follows a major derailment on Thursday afternoon near Lewes, where several Southern train carriages left the track and ended up on their side. About 150 people had been on the service from London Victoria to Eastbourne, which required an emergency evacuation. Two passengers were taken to major trauma centres with “severe” injuries, though BTP confirmed on Friday that these injuries were not deemed to be life-threatening.
