Major Fire at Neasden Waste Facility Disrupts London Transport Networks

A significant fire erupted at a mixed-waste facility on an industrial estate in Neasden, located less than a mile from Wembley Stadium, triggering major disruptions to local transport services. Emergency response teams were alerted to the blaze on Hannah Close at 11:36 a.m., leading to a massive deployment of resources.

London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Andy Pennick confirmed that 20 fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to combat the flames. The fire affected an industrial unit measuring roughly 100 metres by 150 metres. While the blaze was brought under control by 5:00 p.m., Pennick noted that crews would remain on-site for the rest of the day to ensure the site was fully extinguished.

The incident had a significant impact on public transport. Transport for London reported that the entire Metropolitan line was suspended, while the Jubilee line saw no service between Wembley Park and West Hampstead, alongside severe delays on the remainder of the route. Rail services heading into London Marylebone also faced substantial disruption.

As a safety precaution, a nearby Amazon warehouse was evacuated, though it remained separate from the unit directly involved in the fire. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

This event marks the third major fire at a London recycling center this summer, following a blaze in Deptford earlier this month that involved 50 tonnes of household waste. Fire officials have expressed growing frustration over the frequency of such incidents, which are often linked to improperly discarded lithium batteries, such as those found in vapes.

Data from the Environmental Services Association indicates that fires at recycling facilities caused by these batteries are occurring at a rate of more than 10 per week. These incidents are estimated to cost the industry approximately £1 billion annually.
