Police have taken actor Ashraful Haque Don into custody in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of popular Dhallywood star Salman Shah. The arrest occurred on Sunday, August 9, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Following the development, Neela Chowdhury, the mother of the late actor, publicly questioned why other suspects in the case remain at large and continue to live freely.
Speaking from the United Kingdom in a media interview on August 10, Neela Chowdhury expressed deep frustration regarding the investigation. She questioned who has been providing protection to Don, noting that despite being named as a suspect, he had been participating in various public events and moving about without restriction. She demanded to know why it took so long for authorities to take him into custody and insisted that he must not be granted bail, asserting his involvement in her son’s death.
Neela Chowdhury alleged that Don had previously threatened her and made disparaging remarks about her family. She further claimed that Don had exploited Salman Shah for personal gain during the actor’s lifetime, suggesting that his friendship was never genuine. She also raised concerns about why other individuals, including those mentioned by actor Dipjol, have not been held accountable, arguing that their continued freedom has only emboldened them.
The legal proceedings stem from a case filed in October of last year at the Ramna Police Station by Alamgir Kumkum, acting on behalf of Neela Chowdhury, following a court order issued nearly 29 years after the 1996 death of the actor. The case names 11 individuals as suspects, including Salman Shah’s former wife, Samira Haque, as well as Latifa Haque Lucy, Aziz Mohammad Bhai, David, Javed, Faruk, Ruby, A. Sattar, Saju, and Rezvi Ahmed, also known as Farhad.
Neela Chowdhury remains hopeful that interrogating Don while in remand will reveal critical information regarding the other parties involved. She emphasized that the suspects are not beyond the reach of the law and urged authorities to expedite the arrest of the primary suspect, Samira, and all others named in the case. Her primary objective remains securing justice for her son, and she continues to call for a swift conclusion to the legal process.
